Vacancies – Postdoctoral Researcher, full time (39,5 Hours)

At the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (Institut für Friedenssicherungsrecht und Humanitäres Völkerrecht, IFHV) of RUB, the full-time position (39,5 hours a week) of Postdoctoral Researcher (payment according to TV-L E 13) is available starting on the nearest possible date. The position is limited until 31.12.2024 (15 months) with the possibility of an extension.

The IFHV is an interdisciplinary central research institute at RUB located in Bochumer Fenster (near Bochum main station). With its traditionally strong focus on and expertise in international law, the institute fosters research and teaching in the field of Humanitarian Studies, including the participation of the Faculties of Law, Social Science, Geosciences, and Public Health.

You can expect a multifaceted position in a central scientific institute with diverse cooperation partners in Germany and abroad. The position is part of the project "Leave No One Behind" on the inclusion of persons with disabilities in humanitarian action. It is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. The project is carried out together with Handicap International/Humanity and Inclusion e.V. (HI) and Christoffel-Blindenmission/Christian Blind Mission e.V. (CBM). Specifically, the position’s focus lies on conducting social science research. In addition, the position holder will assume responsibilities in the Institute's teaching and research formats as well as in its regular publications.

Your field of responsibility includes:

  • Research, including field research in Africa as part of the "Leave No One Behind" project in cooperation with HI and CBM;
  • Collaboration on publications of the "Leave No One Behind" project;
  • Close coordination with HI and CBM in management and implementation of the "Leave No One Behind" project;
  • Public relations and promotion of the "Leave No One Behind" project;
  • Support of current networks and facilitating new connections between the Institute, other academic institutions and practice partners in humanitarian action and international humanitarian law;
  • Participate in the preparation and teaching of courses in BA programs and in the NOHA Master's program in English;
  • Interest in an independent social science research in the field of humanitarian action, preferably represented across one of the following disciplines: International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, Anthropology, Disability Studies, or Health Policy/Public Health;
  • Participate in the application for external funding and the planning, drafting, proposal writing, and implementation of research projects, particularly those with an international focus;
  • If applicable, preparation of the next phase of the "Leave No One Behind" project and/or follow-up research projects.

Your profile:

  • Completed academic university education and, if applicable, doctorate in the field of social sciences, law or related fields with reference to humanitarian crises or equivalent relevant practical experience in the field of humanitarian action, especially in the inclusion of persons with disabilities;
  • Experience in designing and delivering advanced training and/or university courses;
  • Very good knowledge of the humanitarian system and relevant actors and standards; knowledge of disability inclusion in the humanitarian system is desirable;
  • Having established strong networks in the field of humanitarian action in Germany and abroad;
  • Experience in project planning and implementation;
  • Proven ability to apply for and conduct externally funded research projects;
  • Experience in interdisciplinary scientific work;
  • Experience in research management and academic self-governance;
  • Cooperative work style, flexibility, and organizational skills;
  • Very good written and oral knowledge of English, knowledge of German an advantage;
  • Experience abroad and practical distinctive experience in humanitarian work and/or disability inclusion are desirable.
