Dijkzeul and Team win grant for research on freshwater and climate change in the Pacific Islands

Dennis Dijkzeul, Professor in Conflict and Organization Research at the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV), and colleagues from the Université du Quebec à Montreal (Canada) and Université de Neuchatel (Switzerland) has been awarded a grant for the research project "Securing availability and access to freshwater in a culturally adapted and sustainable way for populations of Pacific Island Countries facing climate change (SAFEPAC)".

The project will last three years and take place in Vanuatu in the South Pacific. Vanuata is deeply influenced by climate change, in particular by the rising sea level. Morgane Rosier, a PhD student from Stephen Brown, the UA Ruhr Senior Research Fellow and Associated Member at IFHV, will also work on this project in Bochum, Vanuatu and Canada.

The project is part of the "International Joint Initiative for Research in Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation", which was initiated by the Canadian New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF). In addition to the Canadians, the DFG participated together with funding organizations from Brazil (FAPESP), Norway (RCN), Switzerland (SNSF), South Africa (NRF), the United Kingdom (ESRC/UKRI) and the United States (NSF)  in thee call for proposals . The selected projects all study ways of adapting to the changed living conditions caused by climate change. A total of 32 international and interdisciplinary projects involving 424 scientists from 45 nations were approved; scientists from German research institutions are involved in twelve of these projects.
